THE POWER OF COMMUNICATIONS

Over two days, Asháninka, Awajún, Shipibo, Yine and Waorani women exchanged strategies for defending their territories against illegal mining, logging and other illicit economies advancing without effective state response. AIDESEP and ORAU, two of the Amazon’s leading indigenous organizations, led the effort.

These women are the first line of defense of the Amazon, and one of the least covered stories in regional media. Reaching hundreds of thousands of people with a story that originates in the territory, told by the women who live it, is a meaningful act of amplification. These pieces brought the complexity, the urgency and the humanity of this struggle to audiences who rarely encounter it.
