Every four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress brings together more than 10,000 decision-makers from 140 countries to set the course of global conservation. In 2025, for the first time in 77 years, Indigenous Peoples led their own summit within the event. Sapiens traveled to Abu Dhabi to cover that shift from the inside.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Over eight days, the Sapiens team carried out real-time coverage with interviews of Indigenous leaders from the Amazon and Mesoamerica, field scientists, and decision-makers during key sessions. These stories are evidence of how human systems and natural systems sustain each other, and how that balance is under unprecedented pressure. Today, only 3% of the planet remains untouched by human contact, according to a study by the University of Queensland. We believe that well-told stories have the power to make more people feel that this narrow margin belongs to them too.
