IN THE SHADOWS OF THE STATE
In the tri-border region where Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia converge, something has been building for decades that most national and international agendas have been slow to name. That is a parallel state, one that does not hold elections, does not issue press releases, and does not answer to any constitution. This is the crisis that Amazon Watch and Amazon Underworld spent two years documenting on the ground.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

To tell a three-country story, we brought in three young indigenous voices who have spent years turning territory into poweful narratives. Helena Gualinga from Ecuador, Tatiana Jacanamijoy from Colombia and Alessandra Yupanqui from Peru.

Each piece was built to travel on social media without losing the weight of the evidence, mercury levels in children’s hair, armed groups named by corridor, rivers losing flow year by year. The story launched as a coordinated campaign and reached audiences in all three countries at once and it was presented at the The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), the intergovernmental organization that brings together the eight Amazonian countries, where it sparked debate among regional governments on coordinated responses to organized crime in the tri-border region.
